I do know of some people who think that working in theatre is easy and there isn’t a lot to it however, in our lesson today I discovered the huge range of jobs you can have in theatre. Before I thought there were only a few jobs such as actors, directors, technicians, stage manager, choreographer, orchestra and musical director. However, I was introduced to a huge amount of jobs that don’t involve being on stage, such as: artistic director, dresser, production manager, set operator, wigs/makeup, front of house, marketing/advertising, public relations, finance, chaperones, education, participation and learning.

We were told that as an actor you have to accept that you are your own product because shops have certain products that they sell but as an actor you are the product. We also spoke about working your way up as an actor through different roles in the theatre, for example being a member of the ensemble cast or chorus in a show and then over time eventually becoming part of the principal cast, however even if you’re part of the production or administration you can still work your way up. Other ways could be to start out doing adverts and commercials and then going on to doing soap operas and bigger things like that. We were told that the key to success as an actor was to always be in work, no matter what it is.

Jobs in the theatre are separated into four categories: performance, administration, production & venue. All of the jobs are tied together by one person, who makes communication easy in the theatre. That job is project manager.
